USA, NEROCA in 51st CC Meet Quarter-finals:

Imphal, Nov 29: USA, Khurai and NEROCA, Laipham Khunou, completed the quarter final line-up of the 51st CC Meet football tournament at Mapal Kangjeibung here.

In all eight teams have advanced to the last eight stage where they will be joined by reigning champion SSU (Singjamei), runners-up Nagaland Police (NP) and Assam's Green Valley.

The last league phase matches played today ended with USA defeating YAC, Yaiskul 3-1 to advance as Group G topper while NEROCA crushed KRYP-SA, Naoremthong, by half a dozen goals without reply.

With group G tantalisingly poised after TRAU's 2-0 win over the Yaiskul side and 0-0 draw with USA earlier in the competition, USA needed an outright win with no less than two goals difference which they eventually acheived.

After S Surchandra provided the breakthrough in the 43rd minute and Y Hemanta's goal four minutes later seem to have cleared USA's passage into the quarter finals, YAC's Somatai Shaiza delayed the rivals' celebration with a 62nd minute goal.

However, M Ibochouba sealed USA's place four minutes from time.

on the otherhand, NEROCA endured no tension against KRYPSA as the former frequently breached the rivals' defenceline who are yet to score a point in the competition.

NEROCA, however, had to beat their last Group H opponent with a huge margin as the other team in the cluster MBSU had held NEROCA 1-1 and defeated KRYPSA 3-1.
Ostensibly aware of the group's arithmetic, NEROCA began on an attacking mode and opened the score only three minutes into the game through T Ajitkumar before goals from Ksh Malemnganba (6th), H Chakravarti (9th) and L Nabachandra (10th) cushioned the lead to 4-0. H Romen added to the Naoremthong misery with a 30th minute goal before Malemnganba found his second of the match two minutes later to take the match KRYPSA's reach.

In quarter-final matches tomorrow, NP will face YWC at 12.05 pm while NISA play ESU at 1.45 pm.

Jharkhand reaction on Assam violence

National Games ban threat to Assam:

Ranchi, Nov 27: Enraged by the violence in Assam targeting tribals, the Adivasi Chatra Sangh (ACS) in Jharkhand has decided to oppose the entry of the northeastern state’s team in the 34th National Games scheduled to be held in Ranchi next year.

The organisation has also decided to enforce an “economic blockade” in Jharkhand as part of its strategy to create pressure on the Centre for the demand of Scheduled Tribe status to the “tea tribes” in Assam.

“If the Assam government fails to give the tea tribes ST status within the next two months, we will not allow the Assam team to set foot on the soil of Jharkhand for participating in the National Games,” said Chamra Linda, the president of the tribal students’ organisation. The National Games is to be held in January-February next year.

Linda said he differed with Jharkhand Mukti Morcha chief Shibu Soren, who gave a clean chit to the Congress government in Assam. “We doubt what he is saying is correct,” he said.

The students’ association boss said the coal that is transported to the Centre and Assam from Jharkhand to fuel thermal plants there would be stopped, resulting in an “economic blockade”. “We have proposed this step. But the dates will be declared if the Assam government fails to fulfil its responsibility of providing ST status to the tea tribes,” Linda said.

A delegation of association leaders marched to Raj Bhavan and handed over a memorandum to the governor’s office. In the absence of Syed Sibtey Razi, who is not in the capital, principal secretary Amit Khare accepted the memorandum.

“Through the governor, we have asked the President to take notice of the demands of the tea tribes. Since it is the President who notifies ST status for a group, why should there be region-wise discrepancy? Tea tribes elsewhere are tribals,” said Karma Oraon, the professor of anthropology, Ranchi University. He said the tea tribes are settled in Assam for the past 150 years and have been denied their constitutional rights even after 60 years of Independence.

Members of the ST cell of the state BJP also visited Raj Bhavan and handed over a memorandum.

19th Meghalaya Invitation Football

Langsning thrash GTC in quarters; enter semi-finals:

Shillong, Nov 27: Langsning SC defeated Gorkha Training Centre (GTC) in the last quarter-final league match of Group A by a whooping 5-2 margin at the ongoing 19th Meghalaya Invitation Football Championship here on Tuesday.

With this victory, Langsning SC not only booked a place in the semi-finals but also topped Group A with four points while GTC and Bangalore District Sports Association (BDFA) are tied with one points each. However, BDFA have advanced into the semi-final with a better goal difference.

Langsning SC dominated Tuesday's match from the beginning and opened their account in the seventh minute as Roland Pyngrope scored a stunner through an excellent pass from centre forward Barister Rymbai.

Three minutes later, Barister overcame three GTC defenders and passed the ball into the box to help right winger Kitbor Kharkongor head the ball into the net.

This was Kitbor's third goal in the three matches that Langsning SC had played in the championship.

Langsning's third goal came with the brilliance of Barister in the 22nd minute after he wrong-footed the GTC defenders to hit a left footer that saw the ball sail into the goal.

However, GTC managed to reduce the margin at the end of the first half as their striker Satya Sen hit the ball over the head of Langsning goalkeeper after seeing the goalkeeper was out of position.

In the second half, GTC played attacking game which paid off in the 64th minute through a goal by Jackie Chand Singh. Jackie scored a stunner from a distance of at least 30 yards to bring down the margin to 2-3.

Eight minutes later, Langsning striker Dajied Rangad Langsning had other ideas in his mind as he ran past three GTC defenders and then lofted the ball over GTC goalkeeper to score his team’s fourth goal.

Ten minutes later, Dajied scored another goal and ensured Langsning SC a 5-2 victory over GTC.

On Wednesday, tournament favourites Combine United from Delhi will take on this year's Super Division champion Ar Hima SC in the last quarter-final league match of Group B.

Combine United has already advanced to the semi-finals while for Ar Hima SC at least a draw would also see them through.

In order to book a place in the semi-final, Laitumkhrah SC would want Combine United defeat Ar Hima SC by a huge margin.

Cricket in Assam

Rising in the East:
The North-East Railway Stadium is a picturesque ground in Maligaon, on the outskirts of Guwahati. Nestled in the verdant Narakasur hills that envelop the ground is the famous Kamakhya temple, one of the most venerated shrines in India.
Assam's Under-15 side are playing Jharkhand in the east zone edition of the Polly Umrigar Trophy. Construction workers are busy digging up the turf at the basketball end of the ground, and trains chug along every few minutes at the railway end. Keeping a
close eye on the cricket is Rajesh Borah (picture above), by all accounts Assam's greatest cricketer.
Borah, currently the head coach at the Assam Cricket Association, turned out in 66 first-class games for the state, and made five centuries in a career spanning 18 years. Most of Borah's games were on this ground. His 62-ball 126 against Tripura in 1988, included 11 fours and 11 sixes and remains one of the fastest hundreds in Indian domestic cricket. ("Don't forget the four consecutive sixes," he smiles). Old-timers in Guwahati still speak of his explosive batting.

A forgotten history:
Borah is one in a long list of Assamese cricketers who rarely got any recognition outside their own playing fields. Locals still speak of torchbearers such as Munna Kakoti and Anup Ghatak, fast bowlers who weren't noticed in the days when India relied solely on spin. Kakoti, nicknamed "Lillee" for his ferocious bowling, faded away after a promising start. Some say he sought refuge in drugs.

"No exposure, no backing, no patron, no recognition," is how Bimal Bharali, a former Assam captain, describes the cricket in the state. "It's continuing even today. I am not surprised that four promising players have decided to join the Indian Cricket League. They might have thought there is no real future here."

Bharali himself showed tremendous promise early on, including a battling 45 against the visiting MCC side in 1976, but then languished in the lower rungs of the domestic scene.

"There's hardly any infrastructure, no stadiums [the Nehru Stadium in Guwahati remains a multi-purpose stadium], and very little off-season training," he continues. "It rains for seven to eight months in a year, so one can't think of off-season training. There aren't too many indoor facilities. Most of the cricket that used to happen here [until last year] was 25-30 over games.

"The pitches were of poor quality. Most of the administrators haven't played the game, so it's tough to expect too much. Many promising cricketers quit the game early. They either took up other sports or decided to settle down in a job. Playing cricket in the north-east is a long, hard struggle."

Silver linings:
Yet Borah and Sanath Kumar, the former Karnataka medium-pacer who is currently coaching Assam, are optimistic about the future. "We started the SP Barua Trophy last year, the first off-season tournament in the state, and cricket is gradually moving away from Guwahati." says Kumar. "Silchar, Dibrugarh and Nagaon have talent. There is one Ranji fast bowler [Krishna Das] from remote Barpeta in lower Assam. Mark Ingty, the medium-pacer, is from a tribe in Shillong. It's a positive sign."

Borah, too, is upbeat about the future. "We were unbeaten in our five Ranji league games last year. We also won the East Zone Ranji one-day tournament. It was the best season in Assam's history. Also, we're sending the Assam team outside the state during the off season more often. Playing in tournaments like Moin-ud-Dowla and Buchi Babu will surely help. We will soon have an exclusive cricket stadium in Barsapara. That's a first."

Assam have benefited from having a number of players from outside the state in their side. This season three veterans from Tamil Nadu - Sridharan Sharath, now the Assam captain; former India opener Sadagoppan Ramesh; and former Tamil Nadu captain Somashetty Suresh - are guiding the youngsters along. "Interacting with these cricketers, watching them practise, seeing them approach match situations, helps the local cricketers immensely," says Kumar. "I am trying to get Assam's cricketers to play in some local leagues too."

One step forward, two back:
The positives have been accompanied by setbacks, though. Just when Assam appeared to be tracing a path back to the Super League, and a few youngsters had emerged as future prospects, along came the Indian Cricket League. The departure of four youngsters - Abu Nechim Ahmed, Pervez Aziz, Sujoy Tarafdar, and Pritam Das - and one senior player, Zakaria Zuffri, left Assam depleted.

Nechim and Aziz were seen as two capable of breaking into the national side - which no player from the north-east has yet done - but the lure of the ICL's money was probably too much for them. Local observers point out how these cricketers come from poor families, and how they have cause to be frustrated at the treatment they get from the system. "There is no real follow-up here," says Kumar. "In other states talented youngsters are spotted early and persisted with. Even if they fail, they don't lose their place. Here people want instant results."

He talks of Palash Jyoti Das and Mrigen Talukdar, both 22, who were Under-15 stars in the ACC Under-15 tournament in Malaysia in 2000. Palash was adjudged the best batsman (317 runs, including two hundreds) of the tournament and Mrigen (13 wickets) the best bowler. Yet they find themselves in the Ranji reserves, at a point in their careers when they should have been thinking about national selection.

Early this month Assam suffered a heavy defeat against Gujarat in the opening round of the 2007-08 Ranji Trophy. Borah isn't too perturbed, and prefers to look at the bigger picture. "Five years back I wouldn't have been speaking about an exclusive cricket stadium in Assam, neither would I be watching talented 15-year-olds play three-day games. Cricket in Assam has come a long way. Give us three years and you could see an Assamese play for India."

19th Meghalaya Invitation Football

Delhi team drubs Laitumkhrah to enter semi-finals:

Shillong, Nov 26: Combine United from Delhi entered the semi-final of the 19th Meghalaya Invitation Football Championship after defeating Laitumkhrah SC 3-2 in the fourth quarter-final league match here on Monday.

Combine United dominated the match right from the beginning and had majority of the ball possession. Combine United, comprising players from different countries of the Africa, well adapted to the local conditions and played in far superior manner comparing to the way they played in their last match.

Combine United strikers continued to put pressure on Laitumkhrah SC defenders throughout the match.

Their hard work paid off when Kingsley Jonathan scored the first goal in the 29th minute.

A minute later, Jonathan was again in the peak of action as he managed to earn his team a penalty. Midfielder Daniel Umfadu made no mistake and put the ball into the net to take the lead to 2-0.

Even after conceding two goals the spirit of Laitumkhrah SC players was very high as they tried hard to break the defence of the Combine United throughout the first half.

Laitumkhrah luckily managed to reduce the margin before the end of the first half through a penalty taken by its striker Seibor Sana. This goal also ensured an exciting contest in the second half.

Amid huge applause from the big crowd, Laitumkhrah SC started the second half in an electrifying manner. Only after three minutes Laitumkhrah got a penalty after a handball inside the box. Seibor Sana again took the penalty shot and this time also he made no mistake to help Laitumkhrah level the score.

In the 30th minute of the second half, Laitumkhrah striker Jeremy Wahlang, who came in as a substitute, nearly put his team ahead. His strong left footer was, however, brilliantly saved by the United goalkeeper.

United sealed the match in the 83rd minute as Kingsley Jonathan brilliantly set up a goal after overcoming three Laitumkhrah defenders and then crossed the ball to striker Felix Nlemadin who netted it to put his team to a 3-2 victory.

In order to qualify for the semi-finals, Laitumkhrah will have to wait the outcome of the match between Ar Hima and Combine United to be played on Wednesday.

Earlier, the match between Laitumkhrah SC and Ar Hima SC had ended in a goalless draw.

For Ar Hima SC, a draw against Combine United would take them to the semi-finals but for Laitumkhrah SC they would want Combine United to defeat Ar Hima by at least 4-2 margin to get the semi-final berth.

On Tuesday, Langsning SC will take on Gorkha Training Centre (GTC) at 1.45 pm.

Langsning SC has already advanced to the semi-finals while for GTC at least a draw would also see them through to the semi-finals.

Ranji Trophy Plate League: Group A

Asom crawl back after batting slump:

Nov 23: Asom fought back strongly after being bowled out by Kerala for 198 runs in their first innings on the first day of the Ranji Trophy Plate Group tie which got under way at the Satindra Mohan Dev Stadium in Silchar today.

Kerala were tottering at 23 for five when the stumps were drawn for the day.

The way the wicket was behaving, as 15 wickets had gone down on the first day of the match, a result is expected. Whoever lakes a lead in the first innings should be in the driver’s seat.

Asom, which won the toss this morning, elected to bat first. But the start was not good for the home side as Souvik Das walked back to the pavilion before Asom was yet to open its account.

The damage was somewhat repaired by S Suresh and Palash Das by adding 70 runs for the second wicket. But once the partnership was broken, wickets started falling like a pack of cards.

Suresh was the top scorer for the side with 57 runs. The other notable contributors were Palashjyoti Das (23), Sadagopan Ramesh (27) and Rajdeep Das (30).

Tinu Yohannan and S Nair bagged three wickets each for Kerala.

It was Dhiraj Goswami who led Asom’s fight-back bagging three wickets for just five runs.

The local crowd will have something to cheer about as local lads — Bilifang Narzary and Sanjiva Rongpi — will turn out for the ONGC team. Whatmore for better cricket infrastructure in Tripura:

National Cricket Academy (NCA) Director of Cricket Operations Dave Whatmore has said Tripura needed to improve cricketing infrastructure to host an international match.

“More fields are required to reduce traffic-jam on the MBB Stadium. The Polytechnique field is good to host domestic matches,” he had said in a recent to Agartala.

He said he would not go for Team India coach and rather would continue to concentrate on ‘own job’.

“I would not even appear before the interview board for selection of Team India coach,” he said adding that he would like to focus on his duty.

Whatmore, who had been appointed to pick up promising young cricketers, is on a four-day visit to Tripura where nine matches of All India Vinoo Mankad Trophy (Under-19) are being played.

Terming the BCCI decision to pick up budding cricketers a historic move, Whatmore said: “I have been moving around the country to choose right cricketers who can fill up vacuum after retirement of former Team India captain Saurav Ganguly and master blaster Sachin Tendulkar.”

“Both Ganguly and Tendulkar are set to bid adieu to international cricket. So there is an urgent need to pick right cricketers so that vacuum can be filled up easily.”
