36th Senior National Women’s Handball

Twin losses for Assam:

Guwahati, Dec 14: Hosts Assam on Friday opened their campaign with two losses in the 36th senior national women’s handball championship at Nehru Stadium here.

The home side went down fighting to Madhya Pradesh 15-17 in their Group C match and then to Himachal Pradesh 12-13. The Assam women’s best efforts went in vain, as their opponents scored over them both in speed and temperament.

Manipur, on the other hand, have won in the two matches they have played so far in Group D. Manipur edged past All India Universities 20-17 and then tamed Uttarakhand 20-4 this evening.

Tripura registered the biggest win of the day, thrashing Tamil Nadu 40-3 in a Group A match, signalling a challenge to defending champions Indian Railways who are pitted in the same group.

The Handball Federation of India today decided to bid for an Asian Championship to be held in Guwahati next year and also to organise some national coaching camps here.

6th Junior Girls National Football

Manipur girls finish runners-up:

Imphal, Dec 7: Manipur suffered 0-1 loss to Orissa in the final of the 6th Junior Girls National Football Championship at Dindigul in Tamil Nadu on Friday.

Meanwhile, in the 53rd National School Games U-17 Football for boys, Manipur defeated Goa 2-0 on Friday. Manipur boys had earlier (on December 5) humbled Rajasthan 5-0.

Manipur will play Kerala on Saturday.

6th National Junior Girls Football

Manipur girls in final:

Dindigul, Tamil Nadu, Dec 5: Defending champions Manipur blanked Goa 3-0 in the semi-final to set up summit clash against Orissa in sixth Junior Girls National Football Championship here on Wednesday.

This is the sixth time that Manipur will be featuring in the final and they have won the title five times.

Itabala (13th), Ngoubi (17th) and Rashi (30th) scored for Manipur.

Orissa beat hosts Tamil Nadu in the other semi-final today (Wednesday).

The final will be played on Friday (Dec 7).

6th Junior Girl’s National Football

Manipur enter semi-finals:

Dindigul, Tamil Nadu, Dec 2: Ng Bala scored a brilliant hat-trick to lead Manipur to a 3-0 victory over Jharkhand and storm into the semi-finals of the 6th Junior Girls National football Championship here on Sunday.

Bala scored in the second, 42nd and 60th minutes to set up Manipur a last four clash on Tuesday against the winner of Tamil Nadu versus Goa match.

National School Games (Under-17) Volleyball

Manipur, Delhi, Orissa make it to quarter-finals:

Dehradun, Nov 28 : Manipur, Delhi and Orissa sailed into the quarter-finals of the 53rd National School Games (Under-17) Volleyball tournament on Wednesday.

Manipur won a close contest against Rajasthan 18-25, 25-19, 25-11 to make it to the last eight while Delhi defeated IPSC in straight sets 25-15, 25-12 and Orissa excelled over Assam 25-23, 25-12 in the boy’s category.

Punjab, Haryana, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan are the other teams to enter the quarter-finals in the boy’s section.

Haryana and Punjab topped Group A with 10 points each, Uttarakhand and Delhi topped Group B with 12and 10 points respectively. In Group C Uttar Pradesh (10 points) and Orissa (8 points) topped the chart, and Manipur (8) and Rajasthan (6) qualified from Group D.

In the quarter-finals, Haryana will clash with Orissa, UP would meet Punjab, Uttarakhand will face Rajasthan and Manipur would take on Delhi on November 29 (Thursday).

In the girl’s (U-17) category, Kerela, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan, Karnataka, Delhi and Tamil Nadu reached quarter-finals.

Madhya Pradesh and Himachal excelled in Group A earning 8 and 6 points respectively. In Group B, Punjab (10points) and Haryana (8 points) topped the chart. Karnataka (6) and Rajasthan (4) qualified from Group C and in Group D, Delhi (14) and Tamil Nadu (12) made it to the last eight.

Kerala will face Rajasthan, Karnataka will meet Himachal Pradesh, Punjab will taste Tamil Nadu and Delhi would face Haryana in quarter-finals tomorrow.
