51st Sir Churachand Football

AMOFA in CC Meet semi-final:

Imphal, Dec 5: AMOFA, Moirang, grabbed the last semi-final berth of the 51st CC Meet Football tournament after a convincing 3-1 victory over Assam's Green Valley at Khuman Lampak Main Stadium on Wednesday while USA, Khurai, defeated City Club, Heirok, 2-1 in an inconsequential quarter-final league round tie.

In semi-final matches, NISA, Thangmeiband, will take on MPSC on Thursday at 1.30 pm while the Moirang side will face SSU, Singjamei on December 7 (Friday) at the same time.

Having pipped NEROCA, Laipham Khunou, by a solitary goal earlier in the competition, a draw would have cleared AMOFA's path to the last four stage but the Moirang side began the match against Green Valley on a positive note with several inroads early in the game despite the opening goal coming late in the first half.

A Stephen Hmar pass resulted in Th Joychandra striking home in the 38th minute before the scorer (Joychandra) increased the lead to 2-0 tapping in a sloppy clearance from the Green Valley custodian in the 48th.

Stephen Hmar put the score line to an unassailable 3-0 in the 63rd minute while Apurva Phukan found the invited team's consolation goal six minutes later.

Green Valley had also suffered 4-2 loss against NEROCA.

S Ginlemlal Guite of AMOFA and Apurva Phukan of Green Valley were booked in the match for unsporting conduct.

In the USA versus City Club match, the former's RK Adarsh broke the goalless first half stalemate with a 50th minute strike while S Surchand doubled the lead two minutes later.

W Daniel was the architect in both the USA scores.

N Jasobanta bridged the score deficit for the Heirok side.

SSU in 51st CC Meet semi-finals:

Imphal, Dec 3: G Ninja Kabui's late strike guaranteed SSU, Singjamei a place in the semi -finals of the 51st CC Meet football tournament as NEROCA, Laipham Khunou overwhelmed Assam's Green Valley 4-2 in another quarter-final group tie here on Monday.

Needing an outright win to seal the last four berth against USA, Khurai, the reigning champions SSU had their own share of anxious moments particularly in first half before Ninja Kabui scored the match winner six minutes from the final whistle to top Group S on six points as SSU had also defeated City Club, Heirok 3-0 earlier in the competition.

The NEROCA versus Green Valley game began with the Assam side taking the lead off an Abhijit Nandy header in the eighth minute which was neutralised by S Thomas in the 22nd minute.

NEROCA struck two minutes later when Nabachandra curled in from near the top of the rivals' penalty area before Ksh Malemnganba extended the lead to 3-1 in the 56th.While H Chakravarti netted the fourth NEROCA goal in the 67th, Apurva Phukan managed to pull back one for Green Valley seconds from end of normal time.

Green Valley face an uphill task against AMOFA in their next Group R quarter-final match as the Moirang side would be equally determined to advance having defeated NEROCA by a solitary goal.

SSU, AMOFA win in CC Meet QF rounds:

Imphal, Dec 1: Defending champions SSU began their quarter-final league round campaign of the 51st CC Meet with a convincing victory over City Club Heirok on Saturday.

At Mapal Kangjeibung here, both SSU (Singjamei) and City Club (Heirok) made cautious starts to the match.

However, as the match progressed, the defending champions slowly got control of the match.

Yet, despite some clear chances to take lead, the SSU strikers floundered and failed to convert a single shot.

In the second half, the Singjamei side was clearly dominating in the mid-field.

Eventually David Kamson headed the ball into the rival net off a fine cross by Kh Oken from the left flank in the 70th minute.

Ten minutes later, Kh Oken set up another for N Dhananjoy who gave SSU a comfortable 2-0 lead.

For the greater part of the second half, the City Club players were contained in their own half.

Their rare forays into the rival half could not make any serious threat to the SSU custodian.

The match was sealed in the 83rd minute with a powerful shot from David Kamson for a 3-0 victory.

Earlier, AMOFA (Moirang) edged past NEROCA (Sangakpham) by a solitary goal via a penalty kick.

In the 12th minute, AMOFA was awarded a penalty kick after S Thomas handled the ball in the penalty area.

Th Joychandra made no mistake to convert it.

NEROCA got a fine chance to equalise the slender lead from a penalty kick awarded in their favour in the 52nd minute, but the Moirang goalkeeper K Premananda came up with a brilliant save to deny L Nabachandra an equaliser for the Sangakpham side.

Despite repeated attempts by NEROCA strikers to neutralise the lead, all their efforts proved futile.

AMOFA collected full three points in their first match of the quarter-final league round.

In the second half, the Wahengbam Leikai side made optimum use of their greater ball possesion.
