Combine United win title in tie-breaker:
Shillong, Dec 3: Combine United (Delhi) bagged the title of 19th Meghalaya Invitation Football Championship by defeating local favourite Langsning SC in the final here on Monday.
Combine United won the match via tie-breaker 4-3.
Monday's final was a close contest throughout the two halves as both the teams tried their best to win the championship. Even there was not much difference between the teams in respect of ball possession.
The first half seemed competitively dull, as there were very few occasions when the ball was about to hit the nets.
However, in the 42th minute, Combine United's David Shittu nearly missed a header and the ball went inches over the goal post.
The second half started in a promising manner with both teams playing their best football.
In the eight minute of the second half, Combine United failed to convert a chance to score as Richard Mzebe's strong left footer taken from outside the box was brilliantly saved by Langsning goalkeeper Alan Patweth.
In 78th minute, Langsning's John Kitbok Kharkongor, top scorer of the tournament, got a chance to break the deadlock but he missed it by a whisker.
Seven minutes later, Mzebe ran over two Langsning defenders and lofted the ball over the goalkeeper's head only to see the ball sailing over the goal post.
Till the end of the stipulated 90 minutes the match was goalless which took the final into extra time.
In the first half of the extra time, both the teams could not create any chance to score. Langsning SC dominated the second half of extra time by keeping the Combine United defenders busy.
It was in the fifth minute that Langsning striker Roland Pyngrope's strong right footer taken from outside the box went inches outside the goal.
Again in the 11th minute, Langsning missed a chance to seal the match as a shot from Milton Kharsati went over the goal post.
With both the teams failing to score in the extra time, too the match was decided by a tie-breaker where Combine United had the last laugh.
Combine United netted four while Langsning could defeat the Combine goalkeeper only three times.
Though the tickets for Monday's match was sold out even before the match started, the Shillong Sports Association (SSA) decided to keep the entrance open in order to allow the football lovers, who failed to get ticket, watch the match.
It has been nearly 20 years that such a huge crowd turned out for a football match. Football veterans of the State compared the crowd of Monday's final with that of Meghalaya-Railways final in 1989.
Tourism Secretary DP Wahlang and Director of Sports and Youth Affairs Aldous Mawlong distributed the prizes to the winners.

Combine United to lock horns with Langsning in final:
Shillong, Dec 1: Combine United (Delhi) entered the final of the 19th Meghalaya Invitation Football Championship by defeating Bangalore District Football Association (BDFA) by a solitary goal in the semi-final here on Saturday.
Combine United will take on local favourite Langsning SC in the final to be played on Monday.
Though Friday's semi-final was a close contest, BDFA had better ball possession than the Combine United in the first half.
In the 35th minute of the first half, BDFA almost scored had Khalender not failed to convert a pass from skipper Karthigayan.
Three minutes later, Karthigayan was again in the peak of action but his strong right footer went pass inches away from the goal.
The first half ended in a goalless draw.
The second half started in an electrifying manner with both the teams trying to outplay each other.
In the 57th minute, Kingsley Jonathan's effort to score for Combine United went in vain as BDFA goalkeeper Ravindran brilliantly saved the powerful hit.
Ten minutes later, as Kingsley tried to score with the ball which was a misdirected pass from a BDFA defender, the BDFA goalkeeper once again showed his worth by saving his team but Kingsley made no mistake score the solitary goal in the second attempt.
In the 83rd minute, Karthigayan missed a chance to equalize for BDFA as United goalkeeper Uche Onyegbule obstructed the ball's way into the net.

Langsning thrash GTC in quarters; enter semi-finals:
Shillong, Nov 27: Langsning SC defeated Gorkha Training Centre (GTC) in the last quarter-final league match of Group A by a whooping 5-2 margin at the ongoing 19th Meghalaya Invitation Football Championship here on Tuesday.
With this victory, Langsning SC not only booked a place in the semi-finals but also topped Group A with four points while GTC and Bangalore District Sports Association (BDFA) are tied with one points each. However, BDFA have advanced into the semi-final with a better goal difference.
Langsning SC dominated Tuesday's match from the beginning and opened their account in the seventh minute as Roland Pyngrope scored a stunner through an excellent pass from centre forward Barister Rymbai.
Three minutes later, Barister overcame three GTC defenders and passed the ball into the box to help right winger Kitbor Kharkongor head the ball into the net.
This was Kitbor's third goal in the three matches that Langsning SC had played in the championship.
Langsning's third goal came with the brilliance of Barister in the 22nd minute after he wrong-footed the GTC defenders to hit a left footer that saw the ball sail into the goal.
However, GTC managed to reduce the margin at the end of the first half as their striker Satya Sen hit the ball over the head of Langsning goalkeeper after seeing the goalkeeper was out of position.
In the second half, GTC played attacking game which paid off in the 64th minute through a goal by Jackie Chand Singh. Jackie scored a stunner from a distance of at least 30 yards to bring down the margin to 2-3.
Eight minutes later, Langsning striker Dajied Rangad Langsning had other ideas in his mind as he ran past three GTC defenders and then lofted the ball over GTC goalkeeper to score his team’s fourth goal.
Ten minutes later, Dajied scored another goal and ensured Langsning SC a 5-2 victory over GTC.
On Wednesday, tournament favourites Combine United from Delhi will take on this year's Super Division champion Ar Hima SC in the last quarter-final league match of Group B.
Combine United has already advanced to the semi-finals while for Ar Hima SC at least a draw would also see them through.
In order to book a place in the semi-final, Laitumkhrah SC would want Combine United defeat Ar Hima SC by a huge margin.

Delhi team drubs Laitumkhrah to enter semi-finals:
Shillong, Nov 26: Combine United from Delhi entered the semi-final of the 19th Meghalaya Invitation Football Championship after defeating Laitumkhrah SC 3-2 in the fourth quarter-final league match here on Monday.
Combine United dominated the match right from the beginning and had majority of the ball possession. Combine United, comprising players from different countries of the Africa, well adapted to the local conditions and played in far superior manner comparing to the way they played in their last match.
Combine United strikers continued to put pressure on Laitumkhrah SC defenders throughout the match.
Their hard work paid off when Kingsley Jonathan scored the first goal in the 29th minute.
A minute later, Jonathan was again in the peak of action as he managed to earn his team a penalty. Midfielder Daniel Umfadu made no mistake and put the ball into the net to take the lead to 2-0.
Even after conceding two goals the spirit of Laitumkhrah SC players was very high as they tried hard to break the defence of the Combine United throughout the first half.
Laitumkhrah luckily managed to reduce the margin before the end of the first half through a penalty taken by its striker Seibor Sana. This goal also ensured an exciting contest in the second half.
Amid huge applause from the big crowd, Laitumkhrah SC started the second half in an electrifying manner. Only after three minutes Laitumkhrah got a penalty after a handball inside the box. Seibor Sana again took the penalty shot and this time also he made no mistake to help Laitumkhrah level the score.
In the 30th minute of the second half, Laitumkhrah striker Jeremy Wahlang, who came in as a substitute, nearly put his team ahead. His strong left footer was, however, brilliantly saved by the United goalkeeper.
United sealed the match in the 83rd minute as Kingsley Jonathan brilliantly set up a goal after overcoming three Laitumkhrah defenders and then crossed the ball to striker Felix Nlemadin who netted it to put his team to a 3-2 victory.
In order to qualify for the semi-finals, Laitumkhrah will have to wait the outcome of the match between Ar Hima and Combine United to be played on Wednesday.
Earlier, the match between Laitumkhrah SC and Ar Hima SC had ended in a goalless draw.
