Indian Oil ITF Junior Tennis

Rupam upsets 4th seed Manshing:

Guwahati, Nov 26: Unseeded state boy Rupam Gogoi caused a major upset on the opening day of the Indian Oil ITF Junior (U-18) Tennis Championship here today.

The sturdy Rupam earned a facile victory over fourth seed fellow country man Manshing Athare 6-2, 6-3. Another Assam player Kaushik Das defeated his state mate Manab Kumar Chakma 6-1, 6-1 in a one sided first round affair.

Rupam today made a brilliant start and dominated the proceeding with powerful services and volleys. Although Mansingh later blamed the umpire for his defeat, Rupam outran his superior opponent throughout the course.

Manab also took no time to ground out the victory as the experienced player did not have any difficulty in pushing young Manab to the base line.

Another local boy Pranai Das was defeated by second seed Adil Hakeem of Australia 6-0, 6-0.

In girls’ section, Dhritidhara Kaushik was downed by R Bhavani 6-0, 6-1 while Ridhima Barooah surrendered to Sayali Bhilare 6-1, 6-0.

Top seed in boys section, Vikram Reddy struggled to beat Genia Gamazov 6-3, 2-6, 6-3.

Top seed in girls’ category, Aliev Angelika of Israel will open her campaign tomorrow against Sweta Rana who defeated Tanvi Gupta 6-0, 6-2.
