NE Veterans’ Football

Imphal veterans top points tally:

Imphal, Dec. 21: Veteran Sports Association, Imphal, defeated All Thangmeiband Veteran Football Association by a solitary goal to top Group A with six points in the Northeast Veterans’ Football Cup at Thangmeiband Athletic Union ground.

Good defending by the Imphal team throughout the match kept the Thangmeiband players at bay.

The lone goal that clinched the match for Veteran Sports came in the 50th minute when G. Dhanakumar gave a clean pass to M. Shyamjai, who converted it into a goal.

The referee gave Thangmeiband player Ng. Ajit the marching order for a foul and later showed yellow cards to two of his teammates and a Veteran Sports Association player. In another match, Southern Union Veteran Football Association defeated Chingoi Baruni Veteran Trust 4-0.

The injury-hit Chingoi Baruni team took the field with nine players only.

The match began on an exciting note for Southern Union when Subhaschandra took a corner kick and scored a goal in the seventh minute.

A little later, Southern Union got a penalty when Chingoi Baruni player L. Brojen handled the ball within the box. Subhaschandra made no mistake in converting the penalty.

N. Tuleshwar and S. Budha added two more goals to wrap up the match.

Bodoland Martyrs’ Gold Cup

Sporting tips from top coach:

Kokrajhar, Dec. 21: Mohammedan Sporting Club coach Sabir Ali has asked Assam to “invest in youth” if it wants to improve the standard of football.

The piece of advice came after Ali’s team won the 8th Bodoland Martyrs’ Gold Cup in Kokrajhar on Tuesday.

“Although we have won the trophy, we need to keep improving. Teams from Assam have been playing well and can pose a challenge if they focus on youth at the grassroots. The OIL team is good; ASEB is good as well. The football grounds are great and Assam is the only state that is hosting so many tournaments,” he said.

On Mohammedan Sporting’s performance in the Gold Cup, he said: “We were 10 players in the second half of the final. That made it difficult for us but we prevailed.”

Ali praised the organisers and the people of Kokrajhar for their support.

“We enjoyed our stay here. The spectators were supportive, though I was surprised to see so few people on the ground. I am thankful to the crowd and the organising committee for their support.”

This is the second time that Mohammedan Sporting have won the Bodoland Martyrs’ Gold Cup. They won the fifth edition of the meet in 2004.

The champion team went home with Rs 50,000 and the gold cup, while the runners-up received Rs 25,000 and a trophy.

7th Women’s Winners Cup

Eastern Sporting, Manipur Police win:

Imphal, Dec. 20: A valiant struggle by striker Ng. Bala Devi seemed to be the only plus point for Naharol Yaipha Thourang Club, which today lost to Eastern Sporting Union 2-1 in a match of the 7th Women’s Winners Cup for B.M. Singh Trophy, played at Khuman Lampak Main Stadium.

In another match, Manipur Police Sports Club continued their good run, fetching their second straight win, beating Kangchup Road Youth Physical and Sporting Association
2-0.

The Naharol Yaipha girls improved on their previous performance and matched the moves of their rivals, Eastern Sporting, in the first half. However, it was almost a lone show by international player Bala Devi, who ran through the match without any support from any of her teammates.

The Naharol team received a penalty as Eastern Sporting player N. Malemnganbi Devi touched the ball inside the danger zone. Y. Kamala Devi took the shot and scored the first and only goal for her team in the 28th minute.

However, Eastern Sporting came back in the match in the very next minute, with L. Naobi Devi scoring the equaliser for her team. The scoreline remained 1-1 at halftime.

In the second half, Eastern Sporting went on an all-out attack. Melody Haokip scored the winning goal for her team from a pass by Naobi Devi.

In the other match, the experienced Manipur Police had no problem in taming the Kangchup Road girls.

O. Bembem Devi scored the first goal for her team in the first half from a penalty kick.

Devi again stuck in the 71st minute, scoring the winning goal for her team, this time also from a penalty.

This was the second straight win for the Manipur cops who remained at the top of the tally with six points.

Assam Club Football Championship

ASEB through to final:

Dergaon, Dec 20: Defending champions ASEB entered the final of the Assam Club Football Championship defeating Assam Rifles 7-6 in sudden death at Bokakhat on Thursday.

In a keenly contested first semi-final, no team could break the deadlock in the regulation time.

The ASEB midfielders Priyo Kumar Singh and Abuan Gonmei performed superbly and their tactical efforts paid dividends.

Both the players lorded the middle third of the pitch and they not only foiled the Rifles attack, led by Akum Ao at the midfield, but also initiated several well planned moves.

Akum and Omana Autlan tried their hearts out to break the ASEB defence but they were virtually bottled up by Birendra Narzary, Mitradev Swargiary and Suresh Das.

In the highly volatile match, referee Debashis Mazumdar had to book as many as five Assam Rifles and three ASEB players.

For ASEB Kamal Chetry, Zico Zoram Sanga, Abun Gonmei, Parikhit Rabha, Birendra Narzary, Mitradev Swargiary and Suresh Das were the successful shooters in the penalty shootout while for Rifles K Naoba, Singh, P Singh, Ajit Kumar Singh, Santa Singh, Akum Ao and Omana Autlan hit the target.

Palash, Jintu sparkle in Bud Cricket:

Guwahati, Dec 20: The first Bud Challenge Twenty20 Cricket tournament for Dhireswar Kalita Cup saw two unique performances on Thursday.

Palashjyoti Das of Gauhati Town Club scored a magnificent 164 while Jintu Das of River Rine Club completed a hat-trick against Bud B in the other match of the day.

The first match of the day was between GCCC 'A' and Ankurjyoti Cricket Academy. Palash, who scored a magnificent century against Tripura in the last Ranji Plate match in the same ground, continued his fine form scoring 164 runs. He needed just 64 balls to score the runs with 18 boundaries.

The innings helped Palashjyoti Das to write a few record in his name. In the Twenty20 format of cricket, his 164 runs could be the highest one in city cricket while the batsman could become the first player of the city to hit 11 boundaries in an innings in the shorter version of the game.

Riding on his magnificent knock and a spirited 85 by Bikash Sharma, GCCC ‘A' scored 280 runs losing three wickets in 20 overs. Ankurjyoti Cricket Academy was bowled out for 88 runs. Bitap Mahanta bagged three wickets for 19 runs while Sidharth Oja scored 39 runs.

In the second match of the day, Jintu Das hogged the lime light, completing the first hat-trick of the tournament. The match saw the comeback of former Ranji cricketer Rajesh Bora in competitive cricket but this was over shadowed by Jintu who scalped four wicket for 26 runs.

Bating first Bud ‘B' was bowled out for 63 runs. Tilak Das and Rajdeep Ojha scored 14 and 13 runs respectively, while Rajesh Bora contributed 11 runs on the board. River Rine reached the target losing just a single wicket. Jintu Das (21) was the top scorer of the side.

Brief Scores:
GCCC 274/3 (Palashjyoti Das 164, Bikash Sharma 25); Ankurjyoti CA 88/4 (Sidharth Oja 39, Somnath Bhattacharyya 25, Bitop Mahanta 3/19).
Bud B 63 (Tilak Das 14, Jintu Das 4/26). River Rine 64/1 (Jintu Das 21, Laxman Das 17, Kaushik Oja 17).

BCCI-ICL Standoff Reaches Assam

Bud Cricket Club refuses to play:

Guwahati, Dec. 19: The face-off between the BCCI and ICL on Wednesday reached Assam, disrupting a premier invitational meet in Guwahati with one of the teams, Bud Cricket Club, pulling out of the semifinal of the 16th Ankurjyoti Challenge Cricket Championship fearing disciplinary action by the Assam Cricket Association.

Bud decided not to play against Shantipur AC, which they said was considering fielding five ICL players.

To top it, Sunil Baruah, the president of the organising club Ankurjyoti, who is also the BCCI curator, resigned from his club. The curator, who was against allowing any ICL player to play, resigned citing differences with other club members.

ACA secretary Bikash Baruah had on Tuesday night stated in a press release that no ICL player was entitled to participate in any tournament conducted by any district association or its affiliated clubs. The restriction was imposed by BCCI, he added.

All the three clubs -- Ankurjyoti, Bud and Shantipur -- are affiliated to the Guwahati Sports Association, which is affiliated to the ACA. However, the tournament, though not recognised by the ACA, is quite popular among the players and several state-level players from both the sides would have squared off against each other in today's match.

Both Bikash Baruah and Sunil Baruah said they have received calls from BCCI functionaries.

Tomorrow's final between Shantipur and Gauhati Town Club, too, is under a cloud, given today's development.

Ankurjyoti general secretary Tridip Medhi described the development as unfortunate and said the Shantipur team did not contain the names of any ICL players.

"Since it is an open meet, everybody is allowed to play. We have nothing to do with the ICL or IPL? We are here for the love of cricket. Only the players will suffer," he said.

Mukut Kalita of Bud, however, said the five ICL players -- Syed Zakaria Zuffri, Preetam Das, Parvez Aziz, Sujoy Tarafdar and Abu Naschim -- were in the Shantipur team.

"We were keen to play. It would have been a good game but we got feelers from the ACA not to play. They (ICL) players are at least financially settled. But how can the players in our team take the risk?" he asked.

Manipur Police win:

Guwahati, Dec. 19: Manipur Police Sports Club on Wednesday made a strong opening statement by posting a convincing five-wicket win over local outfit New Star Club in their first match of the 1st Bud Challenge Twenty20 cricket meet at the Nehru Stadium here.

The atmosphere on the ground was festive with the organisers, Bud Cricket Club, trying to recreate the frills associated with the new version of the game by playing foot-tapping music during the breaks.

After restricting New Star to 110 in 19.3 overs with some splendid fielding and bowling, the Manipur cops, helped by Man-of-the-Match L Kipgen (28 off 24 balls) and Y. Siman (24 off 43 balls), overtook the total with 3.1 overs remaining, despite suffering some early setbacks.

Earlier, Kipgen, a spinner, took two wickets for 20 runs.

Assam Ranji coach Sanath Kumar gave away the Man-of-the-Match award to Kipgen.

New Dawn for Assam Cricketers

ACA to introduce ratings like Men in Blue:

Guwahati, Dec. 17: Assam cricketers will soon be rated on the lines of the Team India players.

The apex sports body in the state hopes that the ratings will help the players by giving them more mileage in the national scene and also ease the selection of probables and teams for the state from the next season onwards.

The Assam Cricket Association officials have already discussed the proposition with a Bangalore-based private firm 5K.

The director of 5K, Rajesh Khurana, has offered to rate players in different age groups from under-15 to Ranji level on the basis of their performance in domestic as well as international levels.

The ratings will shield the players from falling victim to the ACA’s so-called “political favouritism” towards players from certain districts and the practice of “depriving” better players from some other districts.

ACA secretary Bikash Baruah said, “The ratings should help us. No player will now be able to rake up a controversy after not getting a berth in the state team as their ratings will speak for them now”.

Besides easing the pressure on players and helping players judge their own performance, the ACA hopes that the ratings will further help the players get individual sponsorship from the corporate sector.

Although India Cements has chipped in as a team sponsor for the Ranji team this year, none of the first class players have any individual sponsor for their off-season coaching and personal upkeep.

The ACA was completely bowled over by the offer made by the Bangalore firm, as it would also help the apex body sign players on contract for the under-19 and Ranji teams.

Though Khurana could not be contacted for details, sources in his office said the process has been initiated after the “ACA showed keen interest in it”.

The monetary terms offered by 5K are yet to be worked out.

The firm has been rating the Karnataka players since last year.

Though the ACA has resolved to introduce graded contracts on the lines of the national team players, for the under-19 and Ranji players from the current season onwards, the Ranji season ended without completion of even the gradation of players.

The ACA has attributed the preoccupation of BCCI statistician Tapash Roy with his hectic schedule as the reason for the delay in gradation of state cricketers this season. Roy has been asked to provide the statistics of every player to the ACA.

“If 5K does the statistician’s job for us, we will be able to execute the contract system at the earliest,” said an ACA office bearer who attended the preliminary discussion with the Bangalore firm here yesterday.

Some of the state-level players have welcomed the development, saying that they hope the new plan will not turn out to be “another ploy” to delay their proposed contracts.

36th Senior National Women’s Handball

Assam out of meet, Manipur in quarter-finals:

Guwahati, Dec. 16: Hosts Assam bowed out of the 36th Senior National Women’s Handball Championship on Sunday evening after drawing their last league encounter with Chhattisgarh 11-11, even as the sponsorship crisis deepened for the organisers.

Assam ended its Group C engagements with three losses and two wins. The hosts defeated Madhya Pradesh and Orissa but lost their matches against Himachal Pradesh, Delhi and Chandigarh.

The quarter-finals line was also drawn up today. Defending champions Railways remained at the top of the list, closely followed by Maharashtra.

The quarter-finals draw will see Manipur, the only team from the Northeast in the last eight, taking on Chhattisgarh, All India University team will play Punjab, Delhi will meet Haryana and Railways will clash with Maharashtra.

However, it is not only the disappointment of the team not doing well that the organisers -- Assam Handball Association -- have to deal with.

The handball association’s president Kalyan Gogoi said the national meet has met with very lukewarm response, with major sponsors like Oil India Ltd (OIL), Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Ltd (ONGC), Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), Numaligarh Refinery Ltd (NRL) and industrial houses turning down the request for sponsorship.

“Of the Rs 18 lakh budget, only Assam Gas Company Ltd and DS Group has honoured our request. The others, like OIL, ONGC, NRL and IOC, have turned down our request. We would have been happy with whatever contributions they made. It is very sad as we were pinning our hopes on the big houses,” he rued.

Asked how the tournament was coping without support, Gogoi added, “It is because of well-wishers and support from fellow state associations like kabaddi, volleyball and GSA. Sadly, the Assam Cricket Association was very unhelpful when approached for help. The government has promised help of Rs 1.5 lakh but we will still fall short by nearly Rs 3 lakh”.

The lack of interest in the tournament is surprising, Gogoi said, because OIL, ONGC, NRL and IOC had extended over Rs 50 lakh towards the hosting of the international badminton meet.

A source in the oil sector said there was no question of turning down requests. “We always help in whatever way possible. Maybe there was very little time between applying for assistance and disbursal,” the source said.

Assam vs Tripura Ranji Plate Match

Assam pipped by Kerala for semi-final spot:

Guwahati, Dec 12: Assam failed to take the first-innings lead against Tripura in their Ranji Plate Division Group A league match on the fourth and final day at Nehru Stadium here on Wednesday, which resulted to Kerala pipping them by one point for a semi-final berth.

Resuming on 245 for four, Assam needed 216 runs on the final day to surpass Tripura’s first innings 460, but were all out for 410 with Tushar Saha removing overnight not out batsmen Palashjyoti Das and Sridharan Sharath.

The hosts were kept in the hunt by Sadagopan Ramesh, who made an unbeaten 161-ball 101.

Dhiraj Goswami hung around for 105 balls for his 16, as along with Ramesh he added 91 for the seventh wicket. But, all these were not enough as Assam fell short by 50 runs.

Tripura got three points by virtue of their first innings’ lead but still finished last in the group with 11 points while Assam collected one point from the drawn match to swell their total point to 12 and had to be content with third place.

In Surat, Kerala collected five points by virtue of an outright win against Gujarat, who have already qualified for the semi-final from Group A with 22 points from four matches, by nine wickets to aggregate 13 points and book the second semi-final spot from the group.

A simple first innings lead for Assam against Tripura would have ensured them three points from the match and a berth in the semi-finals.

Brief Scorecard:
Tripura 460 (Nishit Shetty 165; Tushar Saha 73 not out; Rajib Saha 66; Krishna Das 5/140) drew with Assam 410 (Palashjyoti Das 114; Sadagopan Ramesh 101 not out; Sridharan Sharath 71; Tushar Saha 4/114)

Brahmaputra Derailment

Spikers recall train nightmare:

Guwahati, Dec. 12: Fifteen-year-old Sagarika Rabha was sleeping peacefully on the lower bunk of the 4055 Down Brahmaputra Mail till a sudden impact sent her crashing to the floor. For a moment she thought she was flying till she landed with a thump.

The next instant, half a dozen people crashed on top of her as 14 coaches of the train jumped tracks. Sagarika, a member of the Assam sub-junior volleyball squad, was on her way to participate in her first big tournament — the 30th sub-junior national volleyball championship in Renukut in Uttar Pradesh.

Eight other spikers and their coach Kumud Bora were also injured in the accident at Nijbari near New Jalpaiguri in West Bengal on Sunday. The train was bound for New Delhi. The accident claimed one life and left over 1,000 injured.

The Class IX student of Gandhi Smriti HS School in Bhetapara recalled the horrifying moments: “I was fast asleep in my coach when I was thrown off my berth as the coaches derailed. Our coach overturned and would have probably rolled on had it not hit a bamboo grove. I was trapped under the weight of my mates who were sleeping on the upper berths,” she said after she arrived by the Sifung Passenger here from Alipurduar at 1pm.

Though disappointed at having missed the national meet that begins tomorrow, Sagarika is also relieved at having escaped a fate worse than the injury on her head. “I would have been playing my first nationals tomorrow. I was injured on the back of my head and the doctors put me on a drip at the NJP Railway Hospital. I have been advised rest as my back is still hurting,” she said.

The Assam contingent comprised 12 girls, 14 boys, two coaches and a manager. They were asked to return by secretary of the Assam Volleyball Association, Bhupendra Nath Choudhury, when he heard of the accident and the injuries. “We did not want to take any risk and asked them to return. Nine of them were injured. Most of the players got down at Nalbari and Barpeta,” Choudhury said.

Echoing Sagarika, Durgamaya Chetri, a student of Class X at IGNOU, said this was the first time she had been involved in an accident. “I injured my back, leg and hand. It was hell. The lights went off and there was a lot of commotion and cries for help. I was sleeping on the upper berth but somehow I managed to catch hold of something and was dangling before our coach Kumud Bora helped me out of the train,” she recounted. Bora himself suffered cuts on his limbs.

Durgamaya said she, too, was treated at the NJP Railway hospital. “This was not my first national but this was my first accident and hope I don’t experience another in this lifetime,” she said.

Assam vs Tripura Ranji Plate Match

Palashjyoti shines in Assam fightback:

Guwahati, Dec 11: Riding on an impressive unbeaten century by opener Palashjyoti Das, Assam put up a valiant show against Tripura on the third day of the four-day Ranji Trophy Plate Division encounter at the Nehru Stadium here on Tuesday.

Resuming their innings at the overnight score of 68 for one after Tripura had put up a total of 460 in the first innings, the hosts, at the end of the day’s play managed a total of 245 for the loss of four wickets.

Though Assam lost some early wickets in Tajinder Singh (10), Nishanta Bordoloi (16) and Mrigen Talukdar (29), the unbeaten 91-run stand between opener Palashjyoti and skipper Sridharan Sharath kept the scoreboard ticking and gave the hosts reasons to smile.

Sharath played a captain’s knock, notching up an unbeaten 52 off 133 balls, which included as many as eight hits to the fence.

But the star of the day was Palashjyoti with his unbeaten 102 off 380 balls. The opening batsman paced his innings quite well hitting the bad balls to the fence at a regular basis.

His unbeaten innings of 102 included 12 hits to the fence.

For the visitors, the pick of the bowler was left arm spinner Tushar Saha who, apart from pocketing two crucial wickets, gave away just 66 runs in his quota of 42 overs. Pacer Vineet Jain claimed one Assam batsman.

Though Assam are yet to avoid follow on, the possibility of anything as such is remote. In-form batsman Sadagopan Ramesh will come next.

Assam still trail by 215 runs as the match is heading towards a draw.

Ranji Plate Group A Match

Mammoth task ahead for Assam against Tripura:

Guwahati, Dec. 10: A career best five-wicket haul by Assam pacer Krishna Das failed to restrain Tripura from setting a big first innings target before the hosts today.

Tripura piled up 460 runs against the hosts on the second day of their Ranji Trophy Plate Group A tie being played at Nehru Stadium here.

In reply, Assam, who need a first innings lead to ensure a semi-final berth, were 68 for one in 30 overs at draw of stumps.

Resuming at an overnight score of 285 for four off 92 overs, the visitors this morning lost Mumbai professional Nishit Shetty off the third ball of a Krishna Das delivery in the very second over of the day.

Shetty could add just one run to his overnight 164 before being bowled out by Das to put an end to a 148-run fifth wicket partnership with Timir Chanda.

Chanda, however, took up the reins of the Tripura innings and shared two more partnerships with wicket-keeper Rajiv Dutta (22) and southpaw Tushar Saha to put up an individual score of 72 runs before being bowled out by paceman Mrigen Talukdar. Chanda’s 236-ball knock comprised seven hits to the fence.

After Chanda’s dismissal, Saha continued to anchor the innings and shared a last wicket partnership of 82 runs with Jayanta Debnath (36, 5x4) to take the Tripura innings beyond lunch.

Tushar Saha remained unbeaten on 73, slamming 11 fours and a huge six over the boundary.

Krishna Das today accounted for the dismissals of Shetty, Abhijit Dey and Debnath to add to yesterday’s two wickets of Bappa Das and Rajiv Saha.

Spinner Arlen Konwar claimed two wickets for 112 runs to join the100 wicket takers’ club in first class cricket. He is the first spinner from Assam to achieve the feat.

Chasing the huge target, Assam started trying with the fifth opener of the season in the form of under-22 all-rounder Gokul Sharma, who replaced injured S Suresh for the match, with Palashjyoti Das at the other end.

Though the openers started cautiously, Sharma was caught in the slips by Rajiv Saha off a Debnath turner for 13 (2x4).

Palashjyoti Das was batting on 35 (5x4) and Tarjinder Singh on 10 (1x4) at the close of the day’s play.

Brief Scorecard:
Assam 68 for 1 (Palashjyoti Das 35 batting; Tarjinder Singh 10 batting) trail Tripura 460 (Nishit Shetty 165; Timir Chanda 72; Tushar Saha 73 not out; Krishna Das 5/140; Dhiraj Goswami 2/76; Arlen Konwar 2/112) by 392 runs

Football in Northeast

No dearth of talent in NE: Aloke, Atanu

Guwahati, Dec 8: Two former India internationals Aloke Mukharjee and Atanu Bhattacharjee have expressed the view that there were good talents in the North-east but that the players of the region should motivate themselves.

Both the former stars, who are employee of FCI, were in the city to attend a coaching camp organized by the FCI for its football players of the North-east. The camp which concluded at the SAI complex on Saturday was attended by 27 footballers.

Both Atanu Bhattacharjee and Aloke Mukharjee had no doubt that the North-east was full of football talent.

Aloke, who was once the assistant coach of the Indian team at the time of Stephen Constantine, said: “The main advantage of the players of this region is their physical fitness”.

Atanu, who was India goalkeeper for a long time and then national team goalkeeper coach, expressed the same view while advising the players of this region to get ideas about motivating themselves.

Replying to a query he said: “I have seen many footballers form this region in different big clubs of the country and during the initial stage they performed exceptionally well. But what happens I don’t know that after two to three years their performance level start dropping and it could probably be that they fail to bear the pressure that comes about in different ways.”

It may be mentioned here that Asom lad Bilifung Narzary, currently representing the ONGC team, played for Mohun Bagan in one season a few years back and during those days it was Atanu who was the goalkeeper coach of the team.

Thus the former goalkeeper of the Asia All Star XI had the opportunity of having a close look at Bilifung. Commenting on a query on Bilifung, Bhattacharjee said: “He is a very good goalkeeper and I am optimist that in the coming days his performance level would be much high if, of course, he sincerely continues with his efforts”.

Ranji Trophy Plate Group A Match

Assam vs Tripura:

Guwahati, Dec. 7: Host Assam’s morale is running high after registering back-to-back wins against Kerala in Silchar and Services during the last two weeks.

The team will now look for an outright win against Tripura to be invincible in second place in the group tally with 16 points.

Tripura, however, will be no pushovers, after registering a four-wicket win against Kerala in Agartala this week.

The crucial Ranji Trophy Plate Group A four-day league match will be held at Nehru Stadium in Guwahati from Sunday.

Assam has 11 points and Tripura eight from four matches each.

Assam need only three points by virtue of a first innings lead from a drawn encounter to seal their berth in the knockouts.

Gujarat lead the group A tally with 22 points from four matches and meet Kerala -- with eight points -- in Ahmedabad from Sunday.

Orissa eliminated Assam in the semifinals last year at Barabati Stadium in Cuttack.

Assam have flown in Bangalore professional left arm spinner Anand Katti to replace Tamil Nadu recruit all-rounder S. Suresh in the match. Suresh had injured his finger in the last match against Services. The Assam Cricket Association will name the state squad for the match tomorrow.

Sources said barring Katti replacing Suresh, there would hardly be any change in the winning combination. The playing XI will have Krishna Das and Mrigen Talukdar as medium pacers and Katti and Arlen Konwar as the spinners. Katti’s inclusion will reinforce the spin attack. “Arlen Konwar will now be able to bowl without pressure, with Katti as a back-up,” said team manager Umananda Bora.

With Suresh out of the squad, either Saurav Bhagawati or Souvik Das will make the cut as a top order batsman and the fifth bowler for the team will be either Bichitra Baruah or Dhiraj Goswami. Tripura, on the other hand, have a promising batting line-up comprising Timir Chanda, Kishore Muhuri, Rajib Dutta, Rajesh Banik and Subal Chowdhury, who would definitely look forward to the batting track of the Nehru Stadium wicket with a fast outfield for some handsome scores.

The toss will once again play a vital role even after the Assam team management has, this time, impressed upon the ground committee to prepare a sporty track after surviving a scare on a purely batting track in the earlier match against Services.
