Manchester United Premier Cup Qualifiers

Manipur teams lose:

Chandigarh, Dec 13: Brilliant display by Rajib Ghorui helped East Bengal Football Club hand out a 5-0 drubbing to Eastern Sporting Union of Manipur in the Manchester United (MU) Premier Cup North-East Zone Qualifying Football India Finals Tournament here on Thursday.

East Bengal FC striker Rajib struck four goals. He booted home the first two goals in the ninth and 16th minutes. Ajay Roy found the target in the 25th minute to make it 3-0. Rajib again sprung into action to score in the 30th and 32nd minute.

In another match, St Stephen’s School Football Academy, Sector 45 (Chandigarh) got the better of Youth Organisation Sports Club of Manipur 2-0.

Stephen’s Academy had to wait for 32 minutes before they opened their account in the 32nd minute through Johny Singh.

Manchester United Premier Cup

Silchar Academy to represent Assam:

Hailakandi, Dec 7: A 16-member team from the Silchar Football Academy will represent Assam in the qualifying rounds of the under-15 Manchester United Premier Cup, to be held in Chandigarh from December 12 to 17.

The team left for Chandigarh yesterday after a function where officials of the academy handed over tracksuits, boots and equipment to the players. Silchar DSA president Badal Dey, secretary Babul Hore, academy president Ashish Gupta and vice-president Jayanta Kumar Ghosh attended the function. The Silchar District Sports Association has extended financial support to the players.

Another zonal qualifying round will be held in Chennai. The main qualifying round matches will be held in Goa from January 15 between the top teams of both the qualifying zonal meets.

The winner will play in the Asian qualifying round, the winners of which will play in the Manchester United Premier Cup in England.
