Guwahati ODI: Betting websites having a field day

Oct. 30: Amid excitement in the build-up to the India-Pakistan ODI at Guwahati on November 5, Assam Police have sniffed something beyond the game of cricket. They have been keeping a close watch of local betting rackets.

Some of the websites have already flashed certain facts and figures about the Guwahati ODI, which would be considered by the gamblers before putting the money on anything.

The police have reportedly received a tip-off that certain pockets in and around the city were trying to cash in on the much-awaited ODI by opening betting centers.

The websites, which have already caught the fancy of people in and around the city, are found to be enticing the people towards betting for the Guwahati ODI. These websites are advising people to consider the track records of ODI encounters between the teams before putting their money on anything.

One of the websites -- www.betfair.com -- has flashed certain details about the Guwahati venue including the win and loss percentages, players to bet on and similar other facts and figures to add momentum to the betting racket.

Among the Indian batsmen, master blaster Sachin Tendulkar is being seen as a good prospect on the ground that it could be his last match in Guwahati and also the last series against the arch-rivals.

Pakistan’s skipper Shoaib Malik, who top-scored with 72 runs in the last match played between the two teams on Indian soil, is likely to be a popular option for betting in the ‘Top run scorer’ category.

Guwahati ODI: Pasta, Pizza in the menu

Oct 30: Pasta and Pizza would be included in the menu for both India and Pakistan cricket teams when they arrive at the Nehru Stadium for the first ODI on November 5.

The BCCI has already sent the menu of both the teams for the match day and it would be same for both sides.

Generally both the teams reach the ground at least one and half hours before the start of the match. So the caterer engaged to provide food to the cricketers would have to start with the serving of breakfast.

Assam Cricket Association sources said according to the menu, toast with spreads (jam, honey or low fat cheese) would have to be served along with bread rolls, fruits (banana, watermelon, pineapple, apple), cereals and fluids like milk, coffee, tea and fruit juice at breakfast.

The lunch menu would have to include soup, steamed rice, steamed vegetables and salads, pasta, naan, bread, roti or bread rolls, grilled chicken pieces and fruit. If wanted, red meat like mutton cooked in little or no oil and grilled chicken could be served at lunch as an added variation.

If both the teams leave the city on the same day, the cricketers would hardly get time to take the meal. However, the ACA is considering keeping the post match menu ready. This would be a bit lighter and would comprise pasta or mini pizzas along with chicken wings or drumsticks.

Apart from this menu, coffee, tea and milk along with water and fruit juice would have to be served to the cricketers throughout the day. Fruits would also be part of it.

Guwahati ODI: Mad rush for tickets

Oct. 30: A sell-out crowd of 22,000 is expected turn up at the Nehru Stadium at Guwahati on November 5, as the cricket fever surrounding the opening tie of the five-match India-Pakistan one-day international series is catching up fans across Assam.

An Assam Cricket Association official said only about a couple of thousands tickets out of the 8,000 tickets allotted for the spectators in the city are left to be sold. The rest have vanished because of the quota earmarked for all the districts, the other NE states, the BCCI and other dignitaries.

He said the demand for tickets this time around was many times more than what was seen in the last few matches played at the Nehru Stadium.

The Rs 150, Rs 450 and Rs 800 tickets are almost exhausted, while a limited number of those priced at Rs 1,500 and Rs 4,500 still remain after the first day’s of sale of tickets at the city’s Latasil playground. The remaining tickets are expected to be sold out tomorrow.

The counters set up at UCO Bank today (Oct. 30) witnessed long queues since wee hours and the number of ticket-seekers soared as the day progressed even as ACA had hiked the price of the tickets by nearly 25 per cent for this match, taking into account the increase in expenses in hosting the match.

Fans turned up at 4:30 am at the counter and thought worth to skip a night’s sleep if they get the tickets.

In the last two matches that were played here, Sachin Tendulkar opted out. But now that he is coming, fans do not want to miss a lifetime opportunity to see the maestro batting.

Sikkim Governor’s Gold Cup from Oct. 27

The All India Governor’s Gold Cup, one of the premier national level football tournaments in the Northeast, begins at the picturesque Palzor Stadium at Gangtok on October 27 with 17 teams from India, Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh taking part.

Nigerian Eagles, Bhutan XI, two clubs each from Nepal and Bangladesh, Mumbai United, Punjab Police, JCT ‘A’ team and Tibetan National Football Association have confirmed participation.

However, Sikkim’s most famous footballer Baichung Bhutia and his team Mohun Bagan will once again give the tournament a miss because of national duties and Kolkata League.

Baichung, a product of Sikkim Football Association’s (SFA) talent nurturing system, has never played at Palzor Stadium.

Launched in 1979, the tournament has been running without any interruptions for the last 27 years. No other tournament in the country can boast of such a record.

'Gold Cup' for the locals, the tournament is like a festival in Sikkim and Gangtok comes alive during the period. Government employees are allowed to go and watch the matches and it is truncated classes for the schools and colleges for the entire duration of the tournament.

This is one tournament the people of Sikkim don't miss for anything. The die-hards wait throughout the year for the Gold Cup to start.

The local talents also get an opportunity to showcase their skills as the state league champions and knockout tournament (Independence Cup) winners get a berth in the Gold Cup along with a selected SFA team.

Sanju Pradhan and Nirmal Chettri was picked from Sikkim Sports Academy by Air India after reaching the semi-finals.

Baichung was first picked up by East Bengal after being spotted from this tournament and rest, as they say, is history.

Hats off to NE sportspersons: the journey ahead

Like a ‘Lotus’ that blossoms above the muddy water, sportspersons from Northeast India have brought laurels for the country despite their troubled native places.

From legendary footballer Dr Talimeren Ao, Olympian weightlifter Kunjarani Devi (whose saluting of the tricolour during the medal ceremony in the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games evoked the supreme emotion of playing for the country), Dingko Singh (who became toast of the country after winning boxing gold in 1998 Bangkok Asian Games) to women world boxing champions Mary C Kom and Jenny Lalremliani, Baichung Bhutia -- football’s Sachin Tendulkar -- and archer Chekroverlu Swuro, the seven sisters (eight with Sikkim) have been the breeding ground for top sportspersons in India.

In football, Dr. Ao was the first captain of independent India's Olympic men’s football team. Now, five Manipuris are in the current national squad and Baichung Bhutia, a Sikkimese, is the captain and perhaps the most famous in history.

In hockey, Manipuris have been in the men’s and women’s national squads. Olympians Neelkamal Singh, Tiken Singh and Thoiba Singh have been household names in their days. Tingongleima Chanu, Suraj Lata Devi, Sanggai Chanu carried the legacy.

Archery has a big presence of northeasterners, from Assam’s world champion Jayant Talukdar, Sikkim’s Olympian Tarundeep Rai and Nagamese Chekroverlo Swuro to the latest Bombayla Devi of Manipur.

In weightlifting, go to any national championship. Half of women’s participants would be from the northeast, especially from Manipur, and they would turn out for other states -- Haryana, Punjab, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu etc.

Manipuris also dominate the national scene in some other sports like sepaktakraw, fencing, baseball, wushu, canoeing and kayaking, judo etc.

Because of the natural talent the Northeasterners have for sports, I thought it high time that a blog dedicated to sports and sportspersons from this region should come up. That was my raison d’etre of authoring this blog. Hope the blogosphere has a place for these worthy sportspersons who are truly ‘Lotus in the Mud.’

Here, you will find important news/views on sporting events happening in Northeast India, on the performance of sportspersons from the region in events held anywhere inside and outside India, and the profiles of these sportspersons.
