NRT Nepal lift title:
Nov 7: NRT, Nepal, lifted the coveted All India Governor's Gold Cup, beating arch rivals Three Star, Nepal, 2-1 at the Paljor stadium at Gangtok today.
This was the fifth time a Nepal team had won the Governor's Gold Cup.
Playing before a capacity crowd, NRT drew the first blood in the 19th minute with a close range shot from striker Nirajan Paymajhi.
Three Star wasted a golden opportunity to equalise in the 31st minute when Lok Bahadur Gurung blasted a penalty kick into the stand.
However, Jumanu Rai compensated for his teammate's blunder with a wonderful equaliser. Drifting down the right box, Rai fired a rasping drive that left the NRT goalie clueless. It was his fifth goal in the tournament.
Three Star were again taken aback by an NRT strike early in the second half. The entire defence stood rooted as NRT defender Bal Gopal Shaukhal connected a corner that crashed into the net in the
59th minute.
This proved to be the winning goal for NRT, who pocketed a cash prize of Rs 1.5 lakh along with the championship trophy, which was presented by Chief Minister Pawan Chamling.
NRT midfielder Basanta Gauchan took the Most Valuable Player of the tournament award, while his team-mate and star striker Anil Gurung was adjudged the man of the match.
Punjab Police, which lost in the semi-finals, was adjudged the most disciplined team of the tournament.

Sikkim Governor’s Gold Cup
All Nepal final in Gold Cup:
Nov 6: It will be an all Nepal final tomorrow with both NRT and Three Star beating their respective opponents in the semi-finals of the 29th All India Governor's Gold Cup football tournament at Paljor stadium at Gangtok today.
In the first semi-final, NRT Nepal defeated high flying Nigerian Eagles 2-1 in an ill-tempered match marred by refereeing controversies.
Anil Gurung gave the lead to the NRT team in the 47th minute by slamming home after the Nigerian goalie failed to properly grasp a cross. This was his third goal in the tournament.
Ten minutes later, Egwane Charles (57th) equalised for the Nigerian side from a goal mouth melee. At that time, the Nepal players were outnumbered in the box with two of their players out in the sidelines with injuries.
The winning goal for NRT was struck by Khum Gurung in the 65th minute which generated a huge protest from the Nigerians who claimed that Gurung was in an offside position. The Nigerian players walked out of the pitch and game resumed after heated a discussion.
The game saw some foul play in the dying minutes and two Nigerian players were shown yellow cards by the referee.
In the second semi-final, Three Star Nepal had an easy game over three time champions Punjab Police with a 2-0 victory.
Jumanu Rai scored both the goals in the 27th and 53rd minute making his tally in the tournament to four.
The first goal from a cross from the left flank and Rai chested the ball, beat a defender and hammered a rasping shot that crashed into the corner of the net.
In the 53rd minute, Rai ran past several defenders to control a long ball which he stepped over sending the Punjab goalie sprawling in the wrong direction. He then just tapped the ball into an empty goal ending the policemen’s run in the tournament.
Both the Nepal clubs are bitter rivals in the Nepal league and an exciting final is on cards,

Sikkim Governor's Gold Cup
Two Nepal teams in semis along with Nigerian Eagles, Punjab Police:
Nov 5: A thrilling lineup of three-time champions Punjab Police, favourites Three Star Nepal, classy NRT Nepal and dark horses Nigerian Eagles is ready to set the stands on fire tomorrow at the 29th All India Governor's Gold Cup semi-finals at the Paljor Stadium at Gangtok.
The first potboiler will be between NRT Nepal and Nigerian Eagles. The high-flying Nigerian team had reached the semi-finals last year but lost to Army XI 1-2 in a high voltage clash.
This time, the Eagles have come up with a different set of players and destroyed Sikkim Police 3-0 in their first match.
BJS, Bangladesh, also became a victim to the physically superior Nigerians in the quarter-finals. The fire power of the team in green has also been bolstered by the arrival of Eze, who is currently playing for Calcutta Port Trust.
''The Nigerian Eagles are a good team and will be a great match,'' said Yogumber Shuwal, NRT coach.
The foxy Nepal coach had led three different Nepal teams to championship victories in 1990, 1992 and 1996. If NRT overcomes the Nigerian challenge, it will be the fourth appearance of Shuwal in the final of the Governor's Gold Cup.
Not that NRT is devoid of fire power. Anil Gurung, the highest paid professional player in Nepal, has already endeared himself to the crowds with his performance. He had scored both the goals in the first match against JCT Academy.
NRT then sent Titanium Kerala crashing out of the tournament with a 1-0 victory in the quarters. The Nepal team depend on short passes and crosses to its tall strikers.
In the second semi-final, Three Star Nepal will face a formidable challenge from the burly Punjab Police players.
The Nepal team amply demonstrated their skills and techniques yesterday when they booted out Bhutan XI 4-0 with an all-round display. It has fast wingers, creative midfielders and attacking strikers that should test the Punjab defenders.
On the other hand, Punjab Police depend on high balls and powerful shots from long distances. Their back four have also ensured a clean sheet so far.
However, the Punjab side’s striking prowess remain doubtful with the team managing to score only one goal in their first match against Assam State Electricity Board.
Punjab Police then defeated Chittagaon Bangladesh and Mumbai United in penalties to enter the semis.
